Daker looked like a cornered animal, his eyes bulgingin the crescent of shadow beneath his cap. He was stillclutching his revolver, and suddenly Wilkins saw hisknuckles whiten as his fingers tightened on the trigger.

`Look out!' he shouted, and the four standing mendived for cover, two to the left, two to the right. Just as hisfinger pulled the trigger, Daker jerked the gun up and thebullet went high, hitting the upper storey of a buildingacross the road, sending stone splinters flying in alldirections.

Wilkins wondered whether he should try jumping theMajor, wrestling the gun out of his grasp, but there was noneed. As though pulling the trigger had released all hispent-up fury, Daker suddenly allowed the revolver to slipfrom his nerveless fingers. A moment later he crumpled,dropping forward on to his knees and then slumping backon to his haunches. His men looked at each other,shocked, as he began to wail like a baby.

Wilkins stood up, not sure what to do or say. `Sir,' hesaid hesitantly, `I...'

But then Daker's hands rose and began scrabbling athis head, dislodging his cap.

Immediately the men jumped back, their shockedexpressions changing to horrified gasps.

As Daker's cap dropped into the dust, they all stared atthe bulging black growths sprouting from his skull likegnarled and poisonous toadstools.
